Was Adolf Hitler one of the smartest people of his time?

Hitler did use his power for evil but you got to hand it to the guy, he was smart enough to brainwash an entire country to murder innocent people. I mean an ordinary joe can't just brainwash an entire country to do what he wants. You try it, see where you'll go. Hitler was successful at it. In that way he was smart. However, he used his power for evil and that was dumb. But in the sense of being able to control people, knowing how to take over their minds, was he smart in that way?
