Has anyone heard that the milky way is splitting?

I was talking with my mom and her friend a couple months ago and her friend was talking about something she heard/read somewhere about the milky way splitting. Supposedly, this is the way new galaxies are formed, like cell division, mitosis..whatever. It also means the end of the world 'n junk. I tried looking that up today but couldn't find anything on it. I was sort of hoping somebody could provide me with an answer that includes a link to a website that talks about this theory thing.
