Political ignorance in the US....?

I was told yesterday by an answerer that Nazis were left wing liberals "such as myself" because they had the word "socialist" in their party name. It was a jaw dropping moment but it also worries me that this kind of ignorance of politics and history might be more widespread than I originally thought. PLEASE REURE ME THIS ISN'T TRUE!
